SUMMARY:City of Alameda - Climate Emergency Declaration
DESCRIPTION:The final Climate Emergency Declaration is on the Tuesday\, March 19th City Council agenda. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. and item is scheduled to be on the consent agenda\, but if we put in speaker slips it will automatically get pulled. Consent items that are pulled are typically heard before regular agenda items (so that’s good). It is important that we get a big turnout and that we have lots of folks available to voice their support (including students! with posters! sunflowers!). This will provide some wind in the City Council’s sail. Please wear blue and green! There will also be a Public Hearing on the annual report on the General Plan and Transportation Choices Plan\, so please stay for that agenda item if you can. \nPlease RSVP:

SUMMARY:Alameda Climate Action Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Please join City staff for the second Community Input Session of Alameda’s Climate Action and Resiliency Plan. At Community Input Session #1\, City staff recorded hundreds of ideas from community members on how Alameda can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and become more resilient and sustainable. While last workshop was about brainstorming ideas\, this workshop is about prioritizing and fleshing out the ideas that were most popular from the last round. Everyone is welcome to this Community Input Session\, regardless of whether you attended the last one and how much prior experience you have. The Facebook page for the event is here:https://www.facebook.com/events/576048262860834/. \nAfter a brief introduction to the workshop\, we will split into three breakout groups and discuss three main topics: greenhouse gas emissions\, flooding and sea level rise\, and other impacts of climate change. Each group will spend 45 minutes on each topic\, then rotate to the next. Each breakout group session will begin with an update from City staff on the work that’s been done since the last Input Session and the potential strategies being considered. The remainder of the time will be spent gathering input on which strategies should be prioritized\, how they can be improved\, and any other considerations community members want to offer. \nThe workshop will be held at Alameda High School on January 26 from 9am-12pm\, with sign-in beginning at 8:45am. Street parking is available on Walnut\, and the high school parking lot on the Walnut side should be open. The workshop will begin in the cafeteria\, which is close to the Walnut parking lot\, but it’s a bit hard to navigate there so we will post signs at all entrances to the high school and have staff walking around to direct you to the correct room. For those who cannot make it in person\, we will open a digital version of the workshop at the following link:https://www.opentownhall.com/7127. \nMore information is available on the project website: https://alamedaca.gov/climateplan. Please share these resources with your friends\, neighbors\, and community! \n

SUMMARY:CASA Fundraiser: Reducing Food Waste\, Movie Night + Reception
DESCRIPTION:Wasted food is one of the biggest contributors to climate change. Over 40% of what is produced in the U.S. is wasted. The impacts are felt in wasted water\, wasted transportation\, wasted energy\, wasted landfill space\, and increased carbon dioxide and methane emissions. In fact\, if wasted food was a country\, it would be the third largest producer of carbon dioxide in the world\, after the United States and China. To address this critical issue (and enjoy some surplus food and wine)\, CASA will show the award-winning film Just Eat It\, celebrate local organizations that are working to reduce food waste\, and hear from a panel of experts\, including former NRDC staff scientist Dana Gunders\, about what you can do to stop wasting food. Featured in the film\, Dana is a leading national expert on food waste reduction\, the author of the NRDC issue paper “Wasted: How America Is Losing Up to 40 Percent of Its Food from Farm to Fork to Landfill” as well as the how-to book “Waste-Free Kitchen Handbook: A Guide to Eating Well and Saving Money By Wasting Less Food.” Dana will be joined by San Francisco star chef Nick Balla of Bar Tartine and Duna fame and passionate food waste warrior\, and Tara Duggan\, James Beard award–winning journalist\, food waste educator and author of “Root-to-Stalk Cooking: The Art of Using the Whole Vegetable.” \nPlease join us for a memorable evening on Wednesday\, October 17th in the Grand Ballroom at the Elks Lodge 2255 Santa Clara Avenue\, Alameda 94501.\n5:30 Book Signing + Reception\n6:30 Feature Film\n7:45 Speaker Panel + Discussion \nTickets $25 in advance/$30 at the door/$10 students + teachers\nFor student volunteering + community service hours OR for student scholarships\, please email: info@casa-alameda.org \nSponsor $500 – 4 tickets\, invitation to book signing with the authors\, our eternal gratitude\nHost $250 – 3 tickets\, invitation to book signing with the authors\, our deep appreciation\nFriend $100 – 2 tickets\, invitation to book signing with the authors\, our sincere thanks

SUMMARY:"Straws" Screening & Jackie Nunez Live
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe City of Alameda is now a leader is reducing plastic pollution! \nJoin us May 30th (6-8 pm) for the award-winning documentary STRAWS\, and meet the woman who inspired Alameda’s local student movement to eliminate plastic straws (and now all plastic food ware) in Alameda. \nDETAILS: \n\nJackie Nunez\, founder of The Last Plastic Straw\, will present an award to the City.\nJackie will show a special presentation of the 30-minute film “Straws” (narrated by Tim Robbins) which highlights impacts of plastic pollution and how communities across the nation\, like Alameda\, are making a difference.\nReThink Disposable Youth Ambassadors (local high school students) will present new findings\n\nSince we are an island impacted by marine litter\, Clean Water Action selected Alameda as its first community-wide project for ReThink Disposable. 100 restaurants across Alameda are being recruited to reduce disposable food ware in favor of reusables (over 40 already signed-up!) The ReThink Disposable Youth Ambassadors will present their findings\, celebrate the ReThink Disposable restaurants in Alameda (over 40 already signed-up)\, and inspire us as we make our transformation to a plastic-free alameda. \nSponsored by the City of Alameda’s “Zero Waste Alameda” initiative and CASA. This is a FREE event. All attendees will receive their very own reusable\, metal straw!

SUMMARY:Ocean Regeneration in Alameda
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nOcean Regeneration\, Marine Permaculture & Sustainable Kelp Farms\nBlue Endeavors is hosting a talk on Ocean Regeneration\, Marine Permaculture & Sustainable Kelp Farms. Damian Mason will present observations from noted climate solutions advocate Brian Von Herzen on how we can help save our ocean by bringing back oyster beds and kelp forests. \nHealthy and abundant Kelp forests provide a multitude of benefits to a region. They store carbon via photosynthesis\, making use of the nitrates in the water. They reduce wave energy & cool the waters\, leading to reduction in size and severity of tropical storms\, protecting the surrounding regions. They feed\, attract\, and shelter a large & diverse array of marine life. Kelp forests can be sustainably harvested for food\, fertilizer\, fuel and pharmaceuticals. Carbon export from the mixed layer into the middle and deep ones can be measured. Algae in our oceans\, rivers & lakes provides over 50% of the oxygen in the air we breathe\, so clearly for our survival\, this situation needs to be remedied as soon as possible. One key solution is Marine Permaculture Arrays. \nWhat is a Marine Permaculture Array and how does it work? \nMPAs regenerate ocean deserts into thriving marine ecosystems by mechanically pumping cool water from the depths to the surface which provides nutrients that support the growth of kelp forests. Kelp forests regenerate the foundation and habitat for diverse multiple species\, forming the base for regenerating ecosystem services. \nImagine a giant soda straw using wave energy to restore overturning circulation\, sucking up cold nutrient-rich water from near the bottom of the ocean to feed the base of a kelp forest array placed eighty feet below sea level. Kelp grows and fixes carbon via photosynthesis faster than any other trees or grasses on the planet. As ships go by and summer shifts to winter\, the kelp gets a “haircut” or naturally dies back\, with much of that carbon-rich material sinking to the bottom of the ocean where it remains for millennia. The kelp and epiphytes that abound in this system filter and purify water\, removing nitrates and other pollutants. Together the kelp and other sea life reduce the acidity of the water as they thrive and grow. A portion of the kelp\, shellfish and a myriad of other species that proliferate in and gravitate to these systems can be sustainably harvested for human uses. One profitable application is to combine seaweed and shells with Biochar\, beneficial microbe-rich wastes and other natural waste materials to create organic soil amendments which\, when applied\, trigger a domino effect in the soil food web to help maximize carbon capture and sequestration on land. \nCheck out the Marine Permaculture teaser:\nhttps://drive.google.com/file/d/1hkptfRIwUn8xzyO9Km5eeLlR4GayYpzf/view
