SUMMARY:Urban Forest Research Presentation
DESCRIPTION:The City is updating its 2010 Street Tree Plan. Scoping for the plan begins this spring and the planning process will begin in July 2020. \nThe City’s Climate Action and Resiliency Plan recognizes the importance of trees: \n\nTrees sequester carbon by breathing in CO2 and storing the carbon as plant material.\nTrees not only help settle airborne particles during wildfire smoke events\, but also remove carbon from the atmosphere and reduce heat impacts.\n\nThe Climate Plan calls for the continued development of urban forest and update Master Street Tree Plan. CASA is hosting Kian Kafaie as our Brown University winter intern who will be researching issues related to the Urban Forest and present ideas for further development in the new Urban Forest Plan. Please join us to hear about Kian’s findings on Wednesday\, January 15th at 6 p.m. in the Stafford Room at the Alameda Free Library. Light refreshments will be served and there will be an opportunity for questions and discussion. \nHere are the relevant local links to the 2010 Plan:\nhttps://www.alamedaca.gov/Departments/Public-Works/Street-Trees\nhttps://www.alamedaca.gov/files/content/public/departments/public-works/city-of-alameda-\nmaster-tree-plan-2010.pdf\nhttps://www.alamedaca.gov/Departments/Public-Works/Urban-Forest\nhttps://alamedacaarchive.org/go-green/street-trees\nClimate Action and Resiliency Plan\nhttps://www.alamedaca.gov/GOVERNMENT/Initiatives/Climate-Action-and-Resiliency-Plan

SUMMARY:CASA Sustainability Book Group
DESCRIPTION:How to Give Up Plastic\nA GUIDE TO CHANGING THE WORLD\, ONE PLASTIC BOTTLE AT A TIME\nBy WILL MCCALLUM \nBook Group Discussion\nSunday\, October 6th from 4-6 PM\nBooks Inc. 1344 Park Street\, Alameda 94501 \nABOUT HOW TO GIVE UP PLASTIC\nAn accessible guide to the changes we can all make—small and large—to rid our lives of disposable plastic and clean up the world’s oceans \nHow to Give Up Plastic is a straightforward guide to eliminating plastic from your life. Going room by room through your home and workplace\, Greenpeace activist Will McCallum teaches you how to spot disposable plastic items and find plastic-free\, sustainable alternatives to each one. From carrying a reusable straw\, to catching microfibers when you wash your clothes\, to throwing plastic-free parties\, you’ll learn new and intuitive ways to reduce plastic waste. And by arming you with a wealth of facts about global plastic consumption and anecdotes from activists fighting plastic around the world\, you’ll also learn how to advocate to businesses and leaders in your community and across the country to commit to eliminating disposable plastics for good. \nIt takes 450 years for a plastic bottle to fully biodegrade\, and there are around 12.7 million tons of plastic entering the ocean each year. At our current pace\, in the year 2050 there could be more plastic in the oceans than fish\, by weight. These are alarming figures\, but plastic pollution is an environmental crisis with a solution we can all contribute to. \nBooks can be purchased at Books Inc. SUMMARY:Discussion of The Great Pivot with author Justine Burt
DESCRIPTION:CASA and Alameda Free Library present Justine Burt for a discussion of The Great Pivot: Creating Meaningful Work to Build a Sustainable Future\, which describes 30 sustainability projects in five areas – advanced energy communities\, low-carbon mobility\, the circular economy\, food waste reduction\, and nature restoration – that will create millions of meaningful jobs. \n \nAmerican society currently faces a crisis in the world of work between outsourcing\, automation\, the gig economy\, and low levels of employee engagement. At the same time\, our transportation systems and means for producing energy\, materials\, and food are degrading life support systems on Earth. The solution\, however\, is simple: we must abandon “business as usual” and draw up a blueprint for creating meaningful jobs that will also dramatically reduce waste and restore the natural world. The Great Pivot is that blueprint. It details 30 projects for developing advanced energy communities\, low-carbon mobility systems\, a circular economy\, a rejuvenated food production system\, and restoring nature. It starts\, of course\, with people. Americans want work that gives their lives purpose and meaning. First\, however\, we must ensure that everyone has shelter\, food\, and access to affordable healthcare and childcare\, especially those lower on the socioeconomic ladder. By doing so\, those securing meaningful work for the first time will be able to pull themselves up financially\, while those currently working disappointingly unfulfilling jobs will jump to more meaningful employment\, whether starting their own business or joining an existing team. The financial sector also wants more sustainability projects to invest in. By harnessing Silicon Valley’s startup culture of disrupting lumbering\, inefficient industries\, the Great Pivot will create both more effective and efficient jobs and manifold investment opportunities. Make no mistake: the investment needed to kickstart a sustainable future is considerable\, but this money will go directly into the pockets of the millions of people doing this meaningful work\, thereby providing the necessities of a stable\, middle class life. With this bold vision we will not only save the environment\, but in the process of creating millions of meaningful jobs\, we will save ourselves. A sustainable future needs us to envision it\, and it needs us to make it happen. It’s time to make the Great Pivot. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Alameda Climate Strike
DESCRIPTION:September 20th is the global climate strike. We are calling for everyone to join us. This past month\, CASA Youth has been planning an “Alameda Climate Strike”\, with different tiers of engagement so that anyone can participate in the global action. We will also be asking teachers to conduct teach-ins throughout the school day\, where they will lead classroom discussions around the climate crisis. The final tier involves Alameda students taking public transportation and joining the SF climate strike itself. \n  \nAlameda Student Meeting Location is Fruitvale BART Station @ 9:00 AM on Sept 20th. Look for students with signs saying “Climate Strike”!! \nGeneral Strike FAQ & Tiers of Engagement for Sept. 20th \nWhat is the significance of September 20th? \nOn September 20\, three days before the UN Climate Summit in NYC\, young people and adults will strike all across the US and world to demand transformative action be taken to address the climate crisis. For more information on the global movement\, please visit https://strikewithus.org/.  \nWhat are the four tiers of engagement? \nSome students find difficulty in participating in civil disobedience due to conflicts with grades or attendance. We do not wish to alienate anyone who wishes to get involved. To help people participate without pushing them to leave school\, we have organized FOUR “tiers of engagement\,” incrementing from least risk-averse to most risk-averse. \nTier 1: “11 Actions You Can Take For Our Earth” \nTier 2: Moment of Recognition \nTier 3: Die-in \nTier 4: Strike \nMore info can be found at:  https://350bayarea.org/event/youth-climate-strike-march

SUMMARY:CASA Sustainability Book Group
DESCRIPTION:Announcing New CASA Sustainability Book Group! \nLet’s Learn Together and Help Change the World! \nThe CASA Sustainability Book group will meet on the first Sunday of every other month\n(June\,August\, October\, December) from 4-6 PM \nWe will meet to discuss a range of books about environmental issues\, sustainability\, resilience and restoration. Through shared ideas\, stories\, dialogue we will discover ways to take action\, make a difference\, and build community while developing and maintaining hope. \nBooks can be purchased at Books Inc. Alameda. CASA Sustainability Book Club members receive a discount. For further information or to register for the CASA Sustainability Book Group email casabookgroup@gmail.com \nFirst meeting Sunday\, June 2nd 4-6 PM at Books Inc.  1344 Park Street\, Alameda \nWe will be discussing “Active Hope- How to Face the Mess We’re in without Going Crazy” by Joanna Macy & Chris Johnstone \n“Active Hope is about finding\, and offering\, our best response to the crisis of sustainability unfolding in our world. It offers tools that help us face the mess we’re in\, as well as find and play our role in the collective transition\, or Great Turning\, to a life-sustaining society.” \n“At the heart of this book is the idea that Active Hope is something we do rather than have. It involves being clear what we hope for and then playing our role in the process of bringing that about. The journey of finding\, and offering\, our unique contribution to the Great Turning helps us to discover new strengths\, open to a wider network of allies and experience a deepening of our aliveness. When our responses are guided by the intention to act for the healing of our world\, the mess we’re in not only becomes easier to face\, our lives also become more meaningful and satisfying.”   ~ From www.activehope.info
