The Leak That Prompted Cleaner Air and Lower Bills
One morning in October 2023, I walked into the garage and saw water pooling around the bottom of our water heater.
Not a good sign.
I checked the label and realized it was well past its expected lifespan. So there I was — mopping up water, taking cold showers, and fielding regular complaints from the rest of the family about their cold showers too.
I needed a replacement FAST. That’s when I learned about heat pump water heaters.
The first thing that surprised me was the efficiency. A heat pump water heater can use about three times less energy than a traditional gas water heater. The energy saved in one year can be enough to drive an EV more than 9,000 miles — roughly around the United States once.
That was my “wait, really?” moment.
Then I looked at the cost. Alameda Municipal Power offers rebates for heat pump water heaters — up to $1,500 — which made the decision much easier. Cleaner energy, lower energy use, and help with the upfront cost.
And the best part? Same hot water.
There are even a few bonus features. A heat pump water heater cools and dehumidifies the air around it. I’ve heard of families using that cooler garage space for wine storage.
Once the water heater was replaced, I started looking at our old gas furnace and thinking, “You’re probably next.”
Right on cue, it broke down a month later — during a cold snap. Lesson learned: replace before it breaks. Repeat after me: replace before it breaks.
I looked into heat pump HVAC — basically an efficient two-way air conditioner that can both heat and cool. For our home, since we rarely need AC, the numbers did not quite pencil out at the time. But if you are considering AC — especially as Alameda summers get warmer — heat pump HVAC is absolutely worth looking into.
For us, the heat pump water heater was the easy win: efficient, practical, supported by local rebates, and better for the environment.
Sometimes electrification starts with a big plan. For us, it started with a puddle on the garage floor.
